Principal's Message

Melissa Goad

Dear Families,

I am so pleased to welcome you to the Spruce Run School website!

It is truly my pleasure to be the principal at Spruce Run School, and to work with our youngest learners every day. After teaching both general and special education for nine years, I became principal at Patrick McGaheran School and then Round Valley School. I have been principal at Spruce Run School since 2009.

SRS is such a special place, where our students are welcomed into the world of education for the first time, and we are able to provide a warm and welcoming learning early childhood environment for children in preschool through first grade. We are proud to cater to our youngest learners’ needs, and we teach children to “Plant the Seeds of Friendship.” At Spruce Run School, we recognize the uniqueness of each child stemming from his/her prior experiences, rate of developmental growth, and individual needs and interests.

At SRS, students are empowered to become kind, caring citizens through challenging academic curricula based on state and national standards. Our students are presented with a program of study that includes a balanced literacy approach with an emphasis on reading and writing skills. Basic literacy skills are emphasized and taught through use of high interest, leveled literature books. Mathematics is taught through working with hands-on activities, manipulatives and solving real problems. We strive to support children in developing their love of learning.

At Spruce Run School, we address the social growth of children through use of the Responsive Classroom approach. Every facet of the school and its culture is affected through this program. Classes hold daily morning meetings to develop community within the class. Children greet each other and share concerns and thoughts during this meeting. The school lives by three basic social guidelines that strike at the core of life for children and staff at Spruce Run:

  • Take care of yourself
  • Take care of others
  • Take care of the environment

I hope that you are able to take some time to explore our website and learn more about our school and district. I am happy to help you in any way; if I can be of assistance, please reach out to our school! I look forward to working in partnership with you to help your child to learn and grow.
